Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) encompass a wide spectrum of conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension. These conditions impose a substantial global health burden, affecting hundreds of millions of individuals and contributing to significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The prevalence of CRDs is rising due to aging populations, urbanization, increased exposure to environmental pollutants, and persistent tobacco use. Low- and middle-income countries bear a disproportionate burden, as limited access to healthcare, inadequate diagnostic resources, and insufficient preventive strategies exacerbate disease outcomes. Patients often experience chronic symptoms such as breathlessness, cough, and reduced exercise capacity, which severely impact quality of life and daily functioning.
Addressing the global burden of chronic respiratory disease requires a multifaceted approach that combines prevention, early diagnosis, and effective long-term management. Public health initiatives targeting smoking cessation, reduction of indoor and outdoor air pollution, and occupational hazard mitigation are essential in lowering disease incidence. Strengthening healthcare systems to improve access to diagnostics, essential medications, and rehabilitation services helps reduce complications and hospitalizations. Education programs for patients, families, and communities increase awareness of early warning signs and promote adherence to treatment regimens. Epidemiological surveillance and research also play a critical role in identifying trends, guiding resource allocation, and developing innovative interventions. Comprehensive strategies aimed at mitigating risk factors, optimizing clinical care, and supporting patient self-management are central to reducing the global burden of chronic respiratory disease and improving long-term respiratory health outcomes worldwide
