HIV significantly weakens immune defenses, making individuals more vulnerable to a wide spectrum of pulmonary infections. Opportunistic pathogens such as Pneumocystis jirovecii, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and cytomegalovirus frequently cause life-threatening complications in people living with HIV/AIDS. Clinical presentations can vary widely, from persistent cough and dyspnea to severe respiratory failure, depending on the degree of immune suppression. Limited access to healthcare services in resource-poor settings further amplifies the burden of disease, contributing to delayed diagnosis and higher mortality.
The prevention and management of HIV/AIDS-related lung infections require integrated strategies that combine antiviral therapy with targeted infection control. Antiretroviral treatment improves immune function and reduces the incidence of opportunistic infections, while prophylactic antibiotics and vaccinations help protect against specific pathogens. Early diagnosis through regular clinical monitoring and advanced diagnostic tests is crucial to initiating timely therapy. Multidisciplinary teams, including infectious disease specialists and pulmonologists, ensure that patients receive both HIV care and respiratory support. On a broader scale, public health initiatives aimed at expanding access to antiretroviral drugs, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and addressing social determinants of health are indispensable for reducing the global burden of HIV-associated respiratory disease.
