Pediatric respiratory infection management focuses on identifying, treating, and preventing acute and chronic infections in children, which remain a leading cause of morbidity worldwide. Common infections include bronchiolitis, pneumonia, influenza, and recurrent upper respiratory tract infections. Children may present with cough, fever, wheezing, nasal congestion, or difficulty breathing, with severity influenced by age, underlying health conditions, and immune status. Accurate diagnosis relies on a combination of clinical evaluation, laboratory testing, and imaging, and distinguishes viral from bacterial infections to guide therapy appropriately. Early identification and intervention are essential to prevent complications such as respiratory failure, chronic lung disease, or secondary bacterial infections.
Management involves a combination of supportive care, pharmacologic treatment, and preventive strategies. Supportive measures include hydration, oxygen therapy, and airway clearance techniques. Antibiotics are reserved for confirmed bacterial infections, while antiviral therapy may be indicated for specific viral pathogens. Vaccination, hand hygiene, and avoidance of environmental pollutants are key preventive approaches. Multidisciplinary care, including pediatricians, pulmonologists, and respiratory therapists, ensures individualized treatment and monitoring. Education for caregivers on symptom recognition, adherence to treatment plans, and infection control is vital. Advances in diagnostic tools, immunization strategies, and targeted therapies continue to improve outcomes in pediatric respiratory infection management, reducing morbidity and long-term respiratory complications.
